The town of Culpeper is rich in history and modern charm located in Culpeper county Virginia in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Culpeper is centrally located between Washington DC and Charlottesville to the south. Culpeper is nestled in the Piedmont River Valley between the Rappahanock and Rapidan Rivers. The town of Culpeper and the surrounding area offer many accommodations, outdoor recreation, a historic downtown area, boutique shopping, museums, monuments and landmarks, restaurants, gourmet shops, antique stores, Civil War history, beautiful Virginia countryside, The Skyline Drive, Shenandoah National Park, and the Blue Ridge Mountains.


History of Culpeper VA

After forming Culpeper County in 1748 the town was named, “Fairfax” after Thomas Fairfax who had an enormous amount of land stretching from the Chesapeake Bay to the Hampshire County West Virginia. The town was surveyed by George Washington who at 27 was a protege of Lord Fairfax. The town was renamed to Culpeper in 1869.

During the Civil War, Culpeper was a crossroads for both Union and Confederate armies taking turns occupying the town. At the corner of Main Street and Davis Street, was the home of General A. P. Hill of the Confederate Army, under Stonewall Jackson.

In the 1980s Culpeper became known as a bedroom community for Northern Virginia and Washington DC suburbs
