History of Cosby TN
Much of the land in Cosby was hunting grounds for the Cherokee. Soon pioneers started receiving land grants and came to Cosby Tennessee to build their homes, forts, and to farm the land. The name Cosby originated from either an early trapper, named Jonathan Cosby or Dr. James Cosby a Revolutionary war veteran and friend of John Sevier.
Most of the area depended on farming, logging and timber. With the great depression in the establishment of the great Smoky Mountains national Park the residence of the area turn to making corn whiskey from their crops as income. The demand for moonshine grew steadily as the prohibition grew.
During World War II the Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge Tennessee nearby brought many people to the area. People turned to distilled illegal liquor from Cosby. They called Cosby,”The Moonshine Capital of the World”.
