Town of Cumberland Gap TN
The historic towen of Cumberland Gap is located in Claiborne county at the foot of the East Tennessee Blue Ridge Mountains. The Cumberland Gap is also known as the “Gateway to the West”. The town of Cumberland is an hour North of Knoxville and a great day trip or weekend vacation. The Cumberland Gap is a national passage through the mountains near the point of where Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee meet.
The historic town of Cumberland Gap offers a variety of attractions, quaint shops, restaurants, and inns. Some popular attractions are the Iron Furnace, The Bicycle Museum, Cumberland National Park and the numerous hiking trails nearby.
History of Cumberland Gap TN
This natural passage was explored by Dr. Thomas and Daniel Boone. During the Civil War the passage was held by the Union and Confederate armies and said to be a strategic location. The Cumberland Gap passage changed hands four times during the Civil War.
The town and the gap was named by Dr. Thomas Walker after William Augustus, The Duke of Cumberland who was a soldier in 1745. The town was formed in 1803 and was incorporated in 1917.
