Avery County created in 1911, is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, known as the High Country of North Carolina. Avery County also has the highest elevation of any county seat located east of the Rocky Mountains, in Newland NC at 3,589 feet in elevation. Avery county has areas reaching 5500 feet above sea level in the small town of Beech Mountain. Avery county is an outdoor enthusiasts dream, with a rugged terrain and a unique climate with four seasons and plenty of activities. Avery straddles the eastern continental divide at 4,000 feet above sea level. The Blue Ridge Parkway snakes through Avery county’s backyard combining nature and the human achievement of the Linn Cove Viaduct. See the city of Charlotte on a good day from Grandfather Mountain, a biopshere and nature preserve with the mile high swinging bridge and NC State hiking trails such as the “Profile Trail” climbing 2000 feet in elevation.
