History of Columbus NC
Columbus was created as Polk county was looking for a county seat. Three commissioners were authorized to secure a piece of land not to exceed 100 acres on which to put the county seat. Columbus was divided into 94 lots and an auction was held for purchase to raise money to erect the public buildings. The town of Columbus was incorporated in 1857. The town was named after, Dr. Columbus Mills, a physician, senator and farmer; and also called the father of Polk County for his efforts in government and the community.
