Bedford is located in the central region of the Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains with Smith Mountain Lake to the South, the city of Lynchburg to the East, and Roanoke to the West. Bedford rests in the valley of the Peaks of Otter and also 9 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Bedford Virginia is also known for the famous Beale treasure buried in the mountains. Bedford is also home to the National D-Day memorial.

History of Bedford VA

Bedford was originally known as Liberty named after the victory from Cornwallis at Yorktown. Liberty was founded as a village in 1782 and was incorporated as a town in 1839. Bedford is home to the National D-Day memorial due to the fact Bedford lost more residents in the Normandy landing. The United States Congress and Bill Clinton authorized the memorial in 1996 and George Bush dedicated the memorial on June 6, 2001. Twenty-two soldiers were lost in the D-Day and Normandy campaign from Bedford Virginia.
