The town of Vinton is located in Roanoke county in the Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains and is bordered Northwest by the city of Roanoke. Vinton is a small town with charm and character with a large bustling city of trade and tourism nearby with the Blue Ridge Mountains surrounding the town; with access to the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The town is home to a variety  of outdoor recreation, breweries and local restaurants, shopping, annual festivals as well as many lodging accommodations. Come stay in one of the hotels, bed and breakfasts, campgrounds or cabin rentals when visiting the area.

When visiting Vinton, VA don’t forget to check out the Roanoke Valley Greenway, the Tinker Creek Canoe Launch, The Explore Park, The Glasde Creek greenway and Wolf Creek greenway, the Veteran’s Monument, Vinton’s Farmers Market, Vinton Museum and the Vinton War Memorial.


History of Vinton VA

The town of Vinton was chartered in 1884. In the 1700s the area was first settled the Vinton area due to it being an Indian Trail which led to the Carolinas. The settlers moved to the Roanoke Valley for its fertile land and water supply.

Some of the early settlers to the Vinton area where Christian and David Gish, who established a grist mill on Glade Creek in 1797 name the town of Vinton, Gish’s Mill. Gish’s Mill became a stop for the Atlantic, Mississippi and Ohio railroads.

In 1884 the town of Vinton was incorporated. Much of the economic growth from Roanoke expanded to Vinton as well. Vinton expanded with major manufacturing plants in the 1900s such as the American Viscose Plant, Precision Fabrics Group, Vinton Milling Company, Vinton Fuel Company, and the Southern State Cooperative.
